Testimonial Country living in an urban environment. Even though Hazelwood is less that 3 miles away from Oakland & 5 miles away from downtown, my yard there attracts deer, raccoons, groundhogs, possums, turkeys and woodpeckers. There is lots of woods & room for everyone to explore nature. I love Hazelwood!

Hazelwood is located 5 miles east of Downtown and 3 miles east of Oakland. It is nestled along the Monongahela River and is minutes away from everything cool. In fact, Hazelwoods unique central location and affordability make it perfect for new families and graduate students.
From small well-kept row houses near the river to larger, two-story brick homes on top of the hill, housing in Hazelwood is varied and affordable. Parks and green space dot the landscape.
The community once flourished with an abundance of hazelnut trees. A beautiful place to live in the nineteenth century, it attracted some of Pittsburgh's oldest and wealthiest families, who built magnificent homes, but the railroad and industry changed the neighborhood. The wealthy departed, and the "good life" was redefined, as working-class men and women moved in to tend the furnaces and the coke ovens. Today they advance into the post-industrial age with Kerotest Manufacturing Corporation.
Hazelwood is one of the most ethnically-diverse neighborhoods. Community activities focus on youth and senior programs. Numerous churches play an active role in the rebuilding of this neighborhood.
